Introduction

Live and work in rural areas teaching English and Math in village schools. Volunteers are placed in local schools from kindergarten to high schools, rural schools and also with special needs children in the area. This program offers volunteers an opportunity to make a difference in the life of children from poor and rural communities.

This is the most hands on program with volunteers given full responsibility to conduct classes and educational activities.

Program Overview
Application Fee $45.
On Acceptance: On acceptance: $900 for 2 weeks and $200 for each additional week. (for year 2010 only)
How long can I come for? Minimum 2 weeks, maximum 12 weeks.
Items included? Pre-departure orientation and support, airport pickup, transport to placement, work support and monitoring, 24 Hour emergency support, personal cellular phone.
Items not included? Daily local transportation. Proper guidance will be provided to participants on how to use local transport systems. Air ticket to India, visa fees and any travel insurance will be the responsibility of the student. Airport drop at the end of the program.
Accommodation All included. On sharing basis in volunteer guest house.
Meals All meals included. (Vegetarian Indian cuisine)
Donations The areas are poorly equipped and any donations of simple teaching supplies like notebooks, reading material, and teaching aids like globe or sports/play equipment are more than welcome! Volunteers can also buy these locally after assessing the needs of the children/schools.
Activities

Teaching English and Math to school children. Participating in teaching and remedial programs for rural kids. Organizing art, sports, play and other stimulation activities to further their holistic growth and development.

 
Program Details

Volunteers are placed in local schools and with non-profit agencies working in the field of education. There are also opportunities for working with mentally challenged children and orphanages.

 
What do I do on the program?

There are several options:

  • Teach and interact with children in a school for mentally challenged kids.
  • Teach in village schools; from kindergarten to high school.
  • Volunteer in local orphanages.
Get involved in teaching and remedial education programs in surrounding villages.
 
Where is the program located?
We have several villages outside Mumbai. Locations include Pen, Lonavala, Kamshet and Karla. All these are located between Mumbai and Pune which are two major metropolitan areas. The settings are idyllic with hills, valleys, historic sites and popular trekking routes. Most of these areas are conveniently located and well connected with Mumbai, Pune and Goa.

Who can participate?

No prior teaching experience or other training required. This program is open to all levels of students and professionals who want to volunteer and learn about India. Participants must be over 18 years of age easygoing and flexible. Individual or groups of students can apply to the program.

They must enjoy working with children and be able to live in rural areas. Volunteers must be open minded, willing to take initiative to contribute and learn from their environment and be respectful to their surroundings.
